Drew Russell. I chop, I filter, I let the tape hiss sit in the mix. Everything here is homage — Madlib's crate instincts, DOOM's off-kilter pocket, Dilla's drunk drums — run through whatever I'm curious about that week. I try a lot of new things. Some of them work.
My love for music first started when I was 5 years old. My pops would burn CDS with classic Hip-Hop along with Reggae and R&B music. Some of the first songs I grew up listening to included Waterfalls by TLC, I shot the Sheriff by Bob Marley and The Wailers. The Hip-hop elements were of Southern Influence artists including Three Six Mafia, T.I., Lil Jon, and others.
I'm restless about it on purpose. One month it's soul loops on my SP-555/SP404, the next it's field recordings from the walk to class or a whole tape built from all erotica themes or Beat CDS themed after specific story lines curated by myself . The homage is the foundation, not the ceiling.
Outside the beats: last year of my degree, too many half-finished projects, always down to work with rappers, singers, filmmakers, and anyone who needs something that sounds like it was found rather than made.
